Myself, I have a Master’s Degree in Industrial Engineering and trained as a watchmaker, so I’m fascinated by mechanics. Johan Goyvaerts Antique Musical Boxes

An art, a craft
and a passion

When Johan talks about repair and restoring old music boxes, things can get technical fast. But you don’t need to be a specialist to get a good sense of the deep passion that motivates his craft – which has elevated it to an art in itself. Over the years, Johan has restored hundreds of antique music boxes to their original state, applying the original techniques and using the appropriate materials. It started over a quarter century ago. In de intervening years, curiosity grew into fascination, and passion blossomed into expertise.

Johan Goyvaerts Antique Musical Boxes

Part history,
part mystery

Self-playing music boxes are part European history, part engineering mystery. We know they sprang from the ateliers of Swiss watchmakers. We know precious little of their methods and techniques. Restoring these artefacts is Johan’s way of communicating with those great minds. First there was a cylindrical mechanism. Around 1890, a 2nd type was introduced playing steel discs. They are the link between the expensive cylinder music box of the 19th century and aimed at small, wealthy market segment, and the mass-produced steel disc version at the end of the 19th and early 20th century.
